My lovely friend,
Kellie the Orange Cat, tagged me for the How I Got My Name Meme! This will be fun.
The short answer is that I was named after the very famous actress, Marilyn Monroe.
But there's a longer answer *smile*. And here's the story:
I showed up as a stray cat on Mom and Dad's back porch. Mom and Dad fell in love with me at first sight, and they decided to bring me into the house and make me an indoor kitty. They quickly learned what an affectionate kitty I am -- not only do I love to be petted, held, picked up, carried around and cuddled, but I also give hugs and kisses, and I smile when I'm smiled at.
Mom is a great fan of the novelist Joyce Carol Oates. And right around the time I showed up as a stray on Mom and Dad's back porch, Mom had started reading this novel:
Blonde is a novel based on Marilyn Monroe's life, and Mom says it's a wonderful, sad, and poignant book. Mom's heart has always gone out to Marilyn Monroe -- though Marilyn was so famous and celebrated, she experienced much sadness and disappointment in her personal life.
Blonde explores those various aspects of Marilyn -- the bombshell persona and the real person underneath. For anykitty or anybean who is interested, Mom wrote, in December of last year, a
review of
Blonde on her writing blog.
Anyway, soon after Mom and Dad had met me, Mom was talking to Dad about
Blonde. She likes to discuss the books she reads. And during the discussion, it occurred to Dad:
Dad: "Her name is Marilyn."
Mom: "Whose?" (Dad shifted gears on Mom quickly; she was still thinking about the novel!)
Dad: "Our new kitty. Miss Beautiful White Girl with the gold eye and the blue eye."
Mom: Oh my goodness, yes -- how perfect for her! She'll be "Marilyn MonREOW." (pronouncing the last syllable of MonREOW like "Meow.")
Dad: *chuckle*!
Mom: *singing*
"I wanna be loved by you, just you,
Nobody else but you,
I wanna be loved by you,
ba-deedly-deedly-deedly-dum-ba-boop-bee-doop
Boop-boop-a-doop!"(and
SQUEE!)
So that's the story of how I got my name. *smile*
And though I'm not as famous as my namesake, I'm not sad. I'm a lucky, happy, deeply-loved kitty.
And I'm going to tag: my darling
Mickeybear, my brother
MaoMao, and my cousin
Gretchen.
